Navigating the vast expanse of space in Starfield requires mastering essential pilot skills, including the ability to dock with other vessels and orbital structures. Whether you are visiting bustling stardocks for trade or boarding disabled enemy craft, connecting securely is a fundamental mechanic. Understanding the targeting system and flight controls ensures a smooth transition from open space to interior exploration.
Targeting the Vessel or Station
Before you can initiate a docking sequence, your ship must be in close proximity to the target station or starship. Activate your ship's targeting scanner by pressing the designated lock-on button while aiming directly at the object. Once targeted, screen prompts will display vital information alongside available interaction options.
Maintaining a steady speed and approach angle makes locking onto the structure significantly easier. If you are involved in combat, you must resolve the encounter before docking procedures become available. Clear the airspace around the target to ensure safe maneuvering during your final approach.
Executing the Docking Procedure
When you are within five hundred meters of the target, a specific prompt will appear on your flight interface. Press and hold the docking key or button to initiate the automatic connection sequence. Your starship will automatically adjust its trajectory to align its docking hatch with the receiving port.
Once the connection is locked, cinematic cameras will showcase your vessel secured to the station. You will then be presented with choices to board the structure, remain in the pilot seat, or undock immediately. Choosing to board instantly teleports your character inside the connected airlock.
Troubleshooting Common Connection Issues
If the docking prompt fails to appear, ensure that you have selected the correct target sub-system or main body. Sometimes ships are slightly out of range, requiring a gentle push forward with your thrusters. Double-check that your ship is not currently registered as hostile by the local faction controlling the station.
For hostile boarding actions, you must first disable the target ship's engines using precision targeting systems. Once the engines are fully offline, approach the immobilized ship to trigger the standard docking prompt. This tactical maneuver allows you to board enemy ships without destroying them completely.
Exploring and Undocking Safely
After stepping onboard, you can interact with NPCs, accept new missions, or trade valuable loot stored in your cargo hold. Space stations offer unique facilities and vendors that provide rare ship parts and supplies. When your business onboard is complete, simply return to the airlock hatch where your ship is attached.
Interacting with the hatch allows you to return directly to your cockpit or undock straight into space. Undocking disengages the mechanical latches and pushes your ship to a safe distance automatically. From there, you are free to engage your grav drive and chart a path toward your next destination.
